Why do my photos look blurry on AOL's Browser?

America Online utilizes graphics compression software that speeds up the delivery of web pages to it's members by compressing images and various multimedia applications. All AOL members have the option of deselecting "Used Compressed Graphics" in their Web Preferences. Go to "Preferences" or "My AOL/Preferences" and click on the Web Graphics tab. Uncheck "Use Compressed Graphics."

A problem with the AOL browser is that it will not reload the graphics once you have visited them with compressed mode on. Once you have viewed an image in compressed mode, it stays on your disk until it ages out of the disk cache (replaced by newer content) or until you clear the cache. To clear the cache, under "Preferences" or My AOL/Preferences, choose Purge Cache or Delete Files under the General or Advanced Tab (depending on the AOL version you are using). Holding down the "Control" key on your keyboard and simultaneously mouse-clicking on the Browser Reload icon while the browser window is active will also clear your proxy cache and display the latest data from the website.

A better solution is to use another browser. Go to Keyword Netscape and download it. You can use it as is as long as you are logged into AOL. Just iconize (minimize) the AOL window and launch Netscape. The same is true for Microsoft's Internet Explorer.
