| BEZEL |
A type of closed setting without prongs. The top metal rim or setting edge of a ring that holds the stone. Similar to a picture frame. |
| CHANNEL |
A series of square or round stones of equal size secured between two metal bands, and held in place by grooves in the sides of the bands. Also referred to as invisible setting. |
| CLOSED |
A style of setting in which there is metal under the stone so that it is not exposed to light. |
| OPEN |
A style of setting in which the facets are exposed to light. The stone is usually supported by a circle of prongs or an open back setting in which the gold beneath the stone has been cut away. |
| PAVE |
Paving stone setting. A style of setting in which many small stones are set together in a mass to cover the entire piece. The stones are set flush with the surface of the metal. This style emphasizes a mass effect rather than a single stone. Often uses an open back setting to enhance the brilliance of the stones. |

Tips or clamps that hold a stone in place. |
| TENSION |
A style of setting in which the stone is held in place by the tension between two prongs. |
